Forensic Mapping Systems Components
A Forensic Mapping System contains three main parts plus Training:
• Electronic Total Station
• Data collector with Evidence Recording Software
• Data Processing software
• ASLET Certification Training
How does the system work?
To precisely locate a piece of evidence position at a crime scene or accident, a Total Station is aimed at the actual evidence (in Reflectorless mode) or a prism positioned at the desired spot (in Infrared mode). When the shot is taken, the prism or the object itself reflects a coaxial beam back to the Total Station where a microprocessor automatically calculates the precise horizontal and vertical angles as well as the distance information. This data is then sent to the Data Collector running MapScenes Evidence Recorder Pro software.
To identify the locations, features and objects being measured, the user selects codes from the Evidence Recorders built-in library. These standardized codes are designed specifically for the Forensic Mapping Specialist. The scene data from the Data Collector is later downloaded into a PC, running MapScenes Pro Software, a powerful forensic CAD program. The MapScenes Pro software allows the operator to put in titles, legends and identify all types of objects including: trees, buildings, vehicles, bodies, etc. with appropriate symbols. The result is a comprehensive, professional quality scene diagram or animation that can be projected in court or printed for reference.
What skills are needed to operate a Forensic Mapping System?
Certified FMS Training by MJC & Associates, Inc.
The KARA ASLET certified 40 Hr. training program is geared toward the law enforcement officer with no prior
surveying experience. The course starts out by showing the officers how easily a picture can be made by connecting dots with lines. Once a Specialist understands this simple concept, the operation of the Kara Forensic Mapping System becomes clear and the class becomes productive immediately using the FMS to create diagrams
of simulated crime and accident scenes. Hundreds of students have benefited from our ASLET trainers real world experience and “hands-on” practical style of teaching Forensic Mapping.
